The youngsters proved that chess is more
than just an "old people's" game when two of Brunei's brightest stars came in
the top three during the 24th National Day Blitz and Rapid chess tournament, held
yesterday at the Brunei Chess Centre in Berakas.
Yee Soon Wei emerged as the overall winner of the Chess Blitz
tournament, followed by 16-year-old Siti Nur Fatimah in second place, and Md Aliuddin in
third place.
Best age group players were also honoured in the Blitz tournament - Md
Nur Arriffin was Best Under 16 player; Ira Kartika was Best Under 14 player; Siti Nur
Fatanah was Best Under 12 player; and Md Nabil was Best Under 10 player.
Meanwhile, the Chess Rapid tournament winner was 16-year-old Md Nur
Arriffin, followed by Hj Abu Nipah in second place, and Md Aliuddin in third place.
Best Under 16 player for the Rapid tournament was Md Arif Afifi; Best
Under 14 player was Md Nazif; Best Under 12 player was Siti Nur Fatanah; and Best Under 10
player was Paddy.
Prizes were presented by Haji Ibrahim bin Hj Mohd Ali, Honorary
President of the Brunei Chess Federation (BFC). The BCF is encouraging young players to
come and train at the centre, which provides computers for virtual chess and Internet, and
