Brunei chess players under the watchful eyes of coach Tair.

With
a challenge trophy contributed by His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah and a total
of US$4,500 cash prize at stake, Brunei have all to play for in the Borneo Intercity Chess
Championship 2009 starting today till tomorrow at the Youth Centre.
Brunei
will be represented by four teams namely Team BSB comprising of Pg Abd Rahman, Yee Soon
Wei, Md Aliuddin Hj Azahari, Ahmad Bukhari Hj Emran and Md Nur Arriffin Hj Azahari while
Team KB consist of Hj Abu Mipak Hj Kura, Leong Voon Chhon, Yap Cheow Tun, Md Japar Timbang
and Emran Sahari.
The
other two teams are Team Tutong (Siti Fatimah Hj Azahari, Md Siraj Munir Ahmad, Ira
Kartika Sabli, Munir Azizi Ahmad and Md Adib Syaqi Hj Khir Zaki) and Team Bangar (Siti
Fatanah, Koh Pokk Huan, Md
Iqbal Hj Khir Zaki, See Jun Wei and Md Nabil Sabli).
Other
teams in the fray are from Miri, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Labuan.
Pengiran
Abd Rahman, the vice-president of Brunei Chess Federation in an interview said: "We
have a good chance of winning the trophy this time because we have our top chess players
participating."
However
he said that teams from Kuching and Kota Kinabalu would pose a strong challenge to the
Brunei.
Trained
under coach Grand Master Tair Vakhldov, the Brunei chess players have undergone intensive
training since November.
Brunei have never won the championship. In the previous Borneo Intercity Chess
Championship hosted in Kuching, Sarawak emerged the winners. |
